Brewing news USA: Texas' Oldest Independent Brewery supports the Lance Armstrong Foundation's LIVESTRONG(R) CHALLENGE

The "little brewery" in Shiner announced on March 23 that it has been named the national beer sponsor for the Lance Armstrong Foundation's (LAF) LIVESTRONG(R) Challenge. The legendary Shiner, known for its award-winning family of beers, will provide the LAF with event support and hospitality for all 2006 LIVESTRONG Challenge weekend events. Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and seven-time Tour de France champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, the LAF has become one of the country's leading non-profit organizations, dedicated to inspiring and empowering people affected by cancer.

"We are proud to have made this meaningful relationship with the Lance Armstrong Foundation," said Shamus Hanlon, Shiner's Brand Group Director of Marketing. "With both the LAF and Shiner Beers being from Texas, it makes sense that we should come together in the fight against cancer. Our greatest hope is that we are seen by the Foundation as a great charitable partner and teammate."

Known for its small town Texas roots and doing its own thing, Shiner was the ideal beer sponsor for the LAF. Shiner's mythical reputation and legendary independent streak matches up well with the Foundation's commitment to attitude and innovation inspired by its namesake Lance Armstrong.

"As we introduce the LIVESTRONG Challenge experience in four additional cities beyond Texas, we are proud to be bringing a little bit of home with us thanks to Shiner Beers," said Mitch Stoller, president and chief executive officer of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Following the ride, walk and run events, Challenge participants will be able to celebrate their accomplishments in the Shiner Beer Garden. "We are grateful to The Spoetzl Brewery for their support of this new fundraising initiative to inspire and empower people affected by cancer."

Shiner, which is fast approaching the century mark in its long brewing heritage, is proud to be the official beer for the LAF's LIVESTRONG Challenge -- a series of five signature fundraising events including a bike ride, run and walk in varying mileage. In addition, the LAF will be the charitable beneficiary of the 8th Annual Shiner B.A.S.H., an iconic Texas cycling event taking place May 6, 2006 with start lines in Austin, San Antonio and Houston. In 2005 the one-day cycling event attracted more than 3,000 riders and culminated with a Texas-size music festival in Shiner, home to the 97-year-old Spoetzl Brewery.

LIVESTRONG Challenge Weekend locations and dates:
Southern CA June 25, 2006
Portland, OR July 30, 2006
Denver, CO August 20, 2006
Philadelphia, PA September 10, 2006

Shiner's sponsorship will be supported by retail point of sale, LAF-branded merchandise, event signage and hospitality support.

The Spoetzl Brewery is the oldest independent brewery(R) in Texas and boasts a world-class, award-winning reputation. The historic "little brewery" offers four year-round brews and two very popular seasonal beers. The Spoetzl Brewery brews Shiner Bock(R), an American-style Bock beer that is Texas' #1 selling Specialty beer and the nation's #4 selling Specialty beer; Shiner Blonde, a Bohemian-inspired natural golden lager brewed from the original Shiner recipe just as it was in 1909; Shiner Hefeweizen, a bottle and keg-conditioned, unfiltered Bavarian-style wheat beer brewed with orange and lemon peels and pure Texas clover honey; Shiner Dunkelweizen, a Bavarian-style dark wheat winter seasonal beer and Shiner's most critically acclaimed brew; Shiner Kolsch, a German-style Kolsch summer seasonal bier; and Shiner Light, a full-flavored amber light beer. During the past two years, Shiner beers have won 13 awards at major worldwide beer competitions, including the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup.
